Exercise: Signs and symbols

In this exercise I needed to read existing signs and drawing on the research around this, I needed to create my own symbol.

My chosen concept was danger.

Danger

I’ve started my research by collating images of danger signs.

After collating these images, I’ve begun my process by trying to re-draw some of the signs and analysing what makes them work.

My drawings of danger signs with notes

Whilst I was drawing, I tried to identify commonalities between the signs.

The things I was looking out for were common shapes, colours, imagery and symbles.

I drew a mind map distilling the ideas around this and collecting the ideas I gained during my research.

My mind map

After I have collated my ideas into categories, I tried formulating my ideas by combining some of the elements from the 3 categories.

I drafted some of these ideas.

My initial drafts

I liked the skull idea so I proceeded to recreating this in a vector programme to make it tidier.

I think the sign turned out pretty cool, definitely not something I would have created if I didn’t go through the whole process of analysis of symbols already used to represent the same concept.
